"and he to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benefit overflowing" (Al-Baqara 2:269) Welcome The Centre for Muslim States and Societies (CMSS) has been established in response to the emphasis on Islam and Muslims globally and regionally. Its planning has been guided by the need for research that will provide us with better understandings of the beliefs and practices of our neighbours as well as the identities, cultures and values of the Muslim communities which reside within liberal democracies, especially Australia. It aims to provide a venue for exploring and promoting moderate voices in Islam and Muslim societies. The CMSS conducts research to gain understandings of the beliefs and practices of Muslims living in the world as majority or minority communities. It aims to explore the relationship between Islam and social, political, cultural and strategic developments around the world with reference to the following areas: - the role of Islam in states with Muslim populations with special emphasis on the Indian Ocean region,
- the implications of Islamic revivalism for different social and religious groups in these societies,
- the linkages between Islam and foreign policy,
- the relationship between ethnicity, Islam and migration in countries with predominantly non-Muslim populations.
Currently, the priority areas of research for CMSS are: The Centre is based in the School of Social and Cultural Studies and draws support from an Advisory Body comprising of members from within and outside UWA. The CMSS engages in collaborative academic and policy-orientated research with other Universities and institutions engaged in research on the various aspects of Islam and Muslim societies. It also cooperates with governmental and non-governmental institutions interested in learning about Islam and Muslims globally and their role within Australia. The CMSS offers visiting fellowships to internationally renowned scholars on Muslim states and attract postgraduate students to participate in a dynamic centre of research. The Centre also provides consulting services to groups and businesses interested in interacting and investing in Muslim states. To be notified of upcoming events or for further enquiries about the Centre you can contact: cmss@uwa.edu.au Or use the enquiry form.
