Television News and People’s Understanding of Events

Mike Berry’s research interests are focused
around the question of how the mass media affects public knowledge and
understanding of social and political issues. Particular areas of interest are
war/peace reporting, political communication, reception theory and public
understanding of foreign policy, international development and climate change.
His research is especially concerned in examining the social, political,
economic and cultural contexts in which messages are produced and received. His
recent publications include Bad News from Israel, and Israel
Palestine: Contested Histories. He is currently writing a book
examining the framing of terrorist threats in national elections campaigns in Russia, the United States and Britain.
Mike Berry recently gave a paper at the Journalist and Islam
conference held at Macquarie University,
7-8 December, 2006.
