The CMSS and the Institute of Advanced Studies presents Dr Jonathan Spyer who is a senior Research Fellow at the Center for Global Research in International Affairs, Inter-Disciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. In his lecture titled, Israel's Strategic Dilemmas in a Changing Middle East, Dr Spyer argues that the rapid change currently undergoing in strategic relations in the Middle East offers both opportunity and cause for concern to Israel. Dr Spyer will explore the components of the new strategic situation and its meaning for hopes of peace in the Middle East. More information... 200825th October 2008, The Imam and the Pastor In Person, The CMSS and Initiatives of Change (WA) presents Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye, the inspiring men featured in the Nigerian documentary Imam and the Pastor. They visit Australia for the first time to share their experiences of how they forged a cooperative partnership in mediation and reconciliation within an environment of religious tensions and conflict. They will share their story through interactive meetings around Australia with valuable lessons for all. More information... 9th October 2008, Dr Sara Roy: Beyond Occupation? Examining the New Reality in Israel and Palestine,The CMSS and Australian Friends of Palestine WA presents Dr Sara, Senior Research Scholar at the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University. Dr Roy will examine critical changes in the way the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is conceptualized, understood and addressed. Dr Roy will explore key paradigmatic shifts at the political, social and economic levels and argue that these shifts collectively represents a critical turning point regarding the possibility of achieving a meaningful and politically and economically sustainable resolution to the conflict. The symposium reflects our appreciation of the role played by Geoffrey Jukes in promoting the study of international relations in Australia and other countries. Apart from undertaking groundbreaking research on Russia, he has supervised a large number of postrgraduate students from a number of countries. Kim is a Murri activist from north Queensland and has been involved in anti-racism, women's liberation and international solidarity campaigns.
