Distinguished Visitor's Lecture
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry

The Centre for Muslim States and Societies proudly hosts the Chief Justice of Pakistan's visit to the University of Western Australia. The Chief Justice will give a public lecture on the Role of Judiciary in Today's Pakistan, managed by UWA Extension.

Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was appointed to Chief Justice of Pakistan's Supreme Court in 2005 and became a central figure in the nation's political struggles and an icon to the country's legal profession and others campaigning for rule of law. He was suspended from office in November 2007 when President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency. He was reinstated on March 16th, 2009, as Mr Musharraf's successor, Asif Ali Zardari, moved to avert a political crisis.

Chief Justice Chaudhry is the recipient of many awards, in particular the Harvard Law School Medal of Freedom, established to honour the achievements of individuals who have worked to uphold the legal system's fundamental commitment to freedom, justice, and equality. Past recipients of the Medal of Freedom include the members of the Brown v. Board of Education litigation team and former South African President Nelson Mandela.

Chief Justice Chaudhry will be speaking at The University of Western Australia on Monday 12 October at 7pm. For tickets and further information, contact UWA Extension on extension@uwa.edu.au or 6488 2433.
