Associate Prof. Lyn Parker is a Senior Lecturer in Asian Studies, School of Social and Cultural Studies, at The University of Western Australia. She is an anthropologist with long experience of working in Indonesia. She teaches Bahasa Indonesia at all levels, Asian Studies units on environmental issues in Asia, society and culture in Indonesia, religion and politics in Asia and gender relations in Asia as well as Honours core units in Asian Studies. Her main research interests are the anthropology of gender, education, fertility and birth, Islam and citizenship. Her publications include From Subjects to Citizens: Balinese Villagers in the Indonesian Nation–State (2003, NIAS Press), The Agency of Women in Asia (editor, 2005, Marshall Cavendish), and a special issue of the journal Intersections: Gender, History and Culture in the Asian Context on Women’s Stories on “Indonesian Women: Histories and Life Stories” (guest editor, 2004). She heads a team of researchers working on an ARC project on “Ambivalent Adolescents in Indonesia” for which she is conducting fieldwork in West Sumatra and Bali.
