Militancy in Pakistan: The causes of militancy, its impact on citizens, regional stability and approaches to deal with the problem

The gradually expanding influence of militants in Pakistan represents the interplay of religious, political, strategic, sociological and economic trends experienced in the country since its inception in August 1947. The CMSS focuses on understanding these relationships with the aim of suggesting ways in which militancy can be countered in Pakistan and neighbouring countries.

Currently, the Centre is conducting research on the role of militant ideologies in Pakistan, the US perceptions and suggested solutions to the problem of militancy in Pakistan, the impact of religion on population and cultural policies, and Pakistan’s foreign relations. The CMSS also issues briefs on Events in Pakistan covering recent developments.

A major international conference on Countering Militancy in Pakistan: Domestic, Regional and International Dimensions, will be exploring the presence and solution of militancy in Pakistan from 3-4 August 2009.
